About this course

Designed to provide an industry recognised skills related to trade work as a mechanical tradesperson, this apprenticeship course will give you the skills to carry out a range of skills required to work in the metals and engineering industry.
As an apprentice, you’ll be required to attend off-the-job training (trade school) one day per week for approximately three years at either our Yallourn or Port of Sale campus.

If you’re currently engaged in your engineering apprenticeship and are interested in mechanics, this is the perfect course to help you specialise in the area you’re passionate about.
A Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade will take you where you want to go with industry-recognised skills. You’ll mix on and off-the-job training, with a combination of classroom-based studies and a simulated workshop environment where you can put your new skills into action!
Over a course of three years, this hands-on course will see you attend one day of trade school per week as you upskill yourself and take that knowledge back to your workplace - meaning you can earn and learn at the same time!
Go on to work in a wide range of mechanical and engineering roles including design, assembly, manufacture, installation, modification, testing, fault finding, commissioning, maintenance and service of all mechanical equipment, machinery, fluid power systems, stationary and mobile equipment, instruments, refrigeration, and the use of computer-controlled machine tools.
Take your studies further by completing a Certificate IV in Engineering (computer-aided manufacture), or an Advanced Diploma of Engineering (not offered at TAFE Gippsland). These courses will enhance your employment opportunities, giving you specialised skills and knowledge.

Career Opportunities

The Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade specifies the competencies required for employment as an Engineering Tradesperson - Mechanical including the design, assembly, manufacture, installation, modification, testing, fault finding, commissioning, maintenance and service of all mechanical equipment, machinery, fluid power systems, stationary and mobile equipment, instruments, refrigeration, and the use of computer controlled machine tools.
Employment outcomes related to this qualification are found in a wide variety of manufacturing and engineering related sectors as well as Engineering Tradesperson - Mechanical roles in other industries.

Further training pathways from this qualification include MEM40119 Certificate IV in Engineering and MEM50119 Diploma of Engineering - Advanced Trade or other relevant qualifications

Skills or Knowledge gained

This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to work as an Engineering Tradesperson - Mechanical within metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries or other industries where Engineering Tradesperson - Mechanical work. The qualification has been specifically developed for apprentices in the above trade. The qualification packaging has been developed on an assumption that competency will be developed through a combination of on and off-the-job learning strategies such as those delivered through a formal apprenticeship. The qualification may also be achieved through formal skills recognition assessment processes.

Mandatory entry requirements:

Apprenticeship. Must be registered with the Australian Apprenticeship Commission. Must be an Australian apprentice.

Recommended entry Requirements:

Cert II Engineering pathways or Engineering VDSS

Limitations to course Entry:

If aged between 15 and 17 years of age will require a school release form from there school.

There is no qualification entry requirement. It is assumed that the learner is engaged as an apprentice under a Training Contract and that the learner is receiving appropriate structured on the job training while undertaking this qualification.
