TAFE-Gippsland-Animal-Care-Trainee-Visit

By Louise Underhill*

The Animal Care industry is booming contributing around 12.2 billion dollars to the Australia economy.

With the increase in pet ownership, more people are opting to work in the animal care field.  The industry sector also has a broad range of careers from animal care attendants, to groomers, wildlife rescuers and veterinary nurses.

While working with animals can be unpredictable and challenging at times, it is extremely rewarding.  Part of the joy of working with animals is building a rapport that can change its life for the better.

TAFE Gippsland Animal Sciences team recently visited one of our trainee employers, Damian Meddaluna, from “Puppies Downunder” located at Maryvale.

We currently have three trainees and one practical placement student on site at Puppies Downunder.   Businesses such as this play a vital role in developing the practical skills and knowledge of our students, providing opportunities to practice animal enrichment in a live setting.

Our Practical Placement Coordinator, Mell Dawes, has been working hard to build our industry partnerships in Animal Care, and we have recently secured placement opportunities at Gumbuya World as well as local veterinary clinics.

So if your dream role is working with animals and doing a job that really makes a difference, then a qualification in Animal Care could be the right career path for you.
